Moringa for Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a silent killer. It is a condition that generally shows no signs or symptoms until it is too late. The American Heart Association states that over 2,100 people die of cardiovascular disease in America every day. That makes heart disease the number one cause of death here in the United States, and high cholesterol is one of the most common ways to develop heart disease.

Before we go any further, it’s important to understand a bit about cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty, wax-like substance that our bodies produce naturally, and it is found in every cell. In most cases, our bodies produce the correct amount of cholesterol. The problem is that many foods are high in cholesterol and will lead to an excess of cholesterol in your body if regularly consumed. People that have high cholesterol levels in their body for an extended period of time are much more likely to develop cardiac diseases and have an increased risk of stroke or heart attack.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait around, if you have been diagnosed with high or even slightly elevated cholesterol levels, to do something about it. There are many ways to fight back.

"We have good, safe treatments for high cholesterol," Dr. Hutter, MD, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, told WebMD. "They can directly lower your risks of heart attack, stroke, and death. So why not take advantage of them?"

The guide to the management and treatment of high cholesterol on WebMD goes on to say that most people will simply need to improve their diet, lose some weight and exercise more to keep their cholesterol levels healthy. There won’t be any need to add pharmaceuticals that do have adverse side effects for many people if they make those simple changes to their lifestyle. They certainly make clear that you should consult your doctor to develop your personal plan for combating high cholesterol, though. Again, high cholesterol will generally not present any visible symptoms or issues before causing cardiac disease. You will want to get your cholesterol levels tested by a doctor and develop your personal plan with their professional help if you have high cholesterol.

Eat Healthier with Moringa Powder

Once you develop that plan with your doctor to combat your high cholesterol, it will certainly entail eating healthier and getting more exercise, which should aid in losing some weight. That’s where we can offer some insight. Moringa powder is a perfect addition to any diet, but it has specific benefits for people with high cholesterol.

For starters, it’s a simple and effective way to improve your diet. Just a few grams of Moringa powder added into your favorite meals and drinks delivers a powerful combination of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals directly to your body. In fact, Moringa has more of these essential nutrients packed into one serving than any other food known to man.

The Moringa tree, and its many by-products, such as moringa leaf powder, have been used for thousands of years to naturally promote healthier blood pressure and cholesterol levels. For those cultures in the know, it has been known as a “heart healthy” food that was simple to add into your diet. Over the past 15 years, moringa has gained lots of attention in the medical and nutritional research community for these amazing properties, and there is lots of evidence that shows the benefits of moringa for high cholesterol and, thus, overall heart health.

Moringa & High Cholesterol: What Recent Studies Say

There is vital need for more human studies into the effectiveness of moringa leaf powder against high cholesterol, but there have been many recent scientific studies into treating high cholesterol with moringa powder and extract that show promising evidence for its accepted use.

The M.S. University of Baroda conducted a recent study into the effects of moringa on normal and hypercholesterolaemic rabbits and found many interesting results. They had a group of rabbits that were fed a normal laboratory diet and a group that was fed a hypercholesterolaemic diet for 120 days. Both groups were given either moringa or lovastatin (a commonly used drug for lowering cholesterol) with their meal every day. They found that moringa delivered a host of measureable benefits to both the normal diet and hypercholesterolaemic diets. Moringa was found to lower serum cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides. They also found the moringa treated groups showed a decrease in lipid profiles in their livers, hearts and aorta for the hypercholesterolaemic group without a decrease in healthy levels for the group fed the normal diet. This was an important finding as it meant that there were not negative impacts for the group that did not have high cholesterol. The study concluded that moringa had a hypolipidaemic effect, which means that it safely lowers high cholesterol.

A group of professors and researchers at the University of Agriculture in Pakistan conducted an overview of all the current studies into moringa and they also covered the benefits for those with high cholesterol. They attributed its cholesterol lowering ability to a bioactive phytoconstituent called B-sitosterol and concluded there was significant evidence to show that moringa actively lowered serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol. The group concluded, “The widespread combination of diuretic along with lipid and blood pressure lowering constituents make this plant highly useful in cardiovascular disorders.”

In a recent study published in the Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences, they found that moringa had great potential in the treatment of a number of cardiovascular complications. They included evidence of moringa’s ability to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

A study in India that used moringa in rats with high cholesterol found, “It was concluded that the leaves of Moringa oleifera have definite hypocholesterolemic activity and that there is valid pharmacological basis for employing them for this purpose in India.”

What Does This All Mean For You?

Whether you have high cholesterol or you know your cholesterol levels are healthy and normal, moringa powder will deliver a host of benefits either way. Everyone can enjoy a nice, natural boost of energy and concentration and we all need our daily dose of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. That’s the good news for everyone. Moringa is great for all cholesterol levels.

However, moringa powder is a great addition to your diet if you are actively working on the treatment and management of high cholesterol, and will make it much easier to eat healthy and exercise. Although human studies are needed, moringa has universally shown a powerful and impactful ability to lower cholesterol levels without adverse side effects in the host of scientific studies. We only referenced a small fraction of the studies out there for moringa and cholesterol. This is wonderful news for many people in the United States that may not even know they need it.
