Best soap nutsSoap nuts are not actually nuts at all. They are a berry that forms a hard nut-like shell when dried. They have been used for centuries for all natural cleaning and laundry care. Soap nuts, also known as wash berries, contain high concentrations of the natural cleaner, saponin. The best soap nuts grow in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in Nepal or Northern India.

How Toxic Are Most Laundry Detergents?

Most people are not aware of the many toxic chemicals that make up many name-brand laundry detergents and fabric softeners. They are laden with chemicals that have been proven to cause skin irritations, rashes and many serious diseases. Many of these same chemicals are responsible for damaging the environment when they run off into lakes and streams. Some of the chemicals commonly used here in America for fabric softeners and laundry detergents have actually been banned everywhere else in the world, like nonylphenol ethoxylate. A recent study by the University of Washington even showed that many of these toxic chemicals in laundry detergent are emitted out into the air in our homes through dryer vents. They also contain  known human carcinogens.

How to Use Soap Nuts for Natural Laundry Care

There are two great options for using soap nuts as your laundry detergent. The first is the take a few Soap Nuts Deseeded (Typically 3-5 Soap Nuts will do) and put them in a wash bag. Throw that wash bag in with your laundry directly and run your load. You will not see a large amount of suds with soap nuts, but they are certainly working to clean your clothes naturally. The best part of using soap nuts deseeded in a wash bag is that the same soap nuts can be used 5-7 times. You also won’t need any dryer fabric or static remover. Simply put the damp wash bag with soap nuts in the dryer with your clothes and it does an excellent job of keeping your clothes smelling clean and feeling soft without too much static.

The other option is a premade soap nuts liquid. The obvious advantage to soap nuts liquid is ease of use. You simply pour a bit of liquid like you would any other detergent in with your laundry. There is no need to worry about pouring it directly on your clothes and linens like toxic detergents. You do not need too much liquid for a typical size load of laundry. An ounce of soap nuts liquid should last you about 15 loads of laundry.

One of the worst offenders are people selling soap nuts whole or full. All that this means is they have left the seeds in the soap nuts. The problem is that soap nut seeds contain absolutely no saponin and have zero cleaning power. They will make that bag of soap nuts weigh more so that you pay more. Another common trend is exaggerating the number of loads that soap nuts can be used in laundry. We have seen companies try to say that you can 15 or more loads of laundry and this is irresponsible at best. It gives soap nuts a bad name in general, especially when otherwise reputable companies make these outrageous claims.
